Welcome to the Giroscope Site

Giroscope is an award-winning housing organisation based in Hull, England. We are a community-based project that has been providing work and accommodation in West Hull for almost twenty-five years.

We buy and renovate empty and dilapidated properties and then let them out to people in housing need. As well as providing housing we offer work experience and training to a wide range of people in our community.

Since 1985 we have bought and renovated more than thirty properties to provide affordable homes for many hundreds of people. We also support people wishing to run other community businesses by providing affordable retail and workshop space.

We are an environmentally-friendly company incorporating energy efficient features into our properties. We have Hull's only solar power station that provides electricity for our workshops at our Green business park in Arthur Street in West Hull.

With the whole issue of housing at the top of the social and political agenda in this country, Giroscope provides a sustainable and alternative housing management model. We actively contribute to all aspects of the housing debate both on a local and a national level. We continue to campaign against the demolition of much of the North's Victorian/Edwardian terraced housing heritage - the government's increasingly demoralized Pathfinder programme.

We also continue to suggest practical alternatives to demolishing structurally-sound Victorian homes and replacing them with characterless poor-quality new build. For example by using local labour & firms to renovate empty properties, using environmentally-friendly materials and then either letting them out to people in housing need or offering them for sale to create mixed sustainable communities.
